Former Turkish Ambassadors Share Foreign Policy Outlook with Atlantans

GCIV hosted two former Turkish ambassadors participating in the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program May 6-8. While on this trip, Ambassadors Ahmet Aksoy and Osman Arim represented the Foreign Policy Institute at Bilkent University in Ankara. They had the opportunity meet with their professional counterparts and engage in dialogue with local citizens.

On their first day of professional appointments, the former ambassadors met with Dr. Vicki Birchfield and Ms. Karolyn Benger of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech. They discussed the school's foreign policy research and democratization of the Middle East. After this first appointment, the ambassadors came to the Istanbul Center for a GCIV Global Lunch Forum.

The Istanbul Center graciously provided an assortment of Turkish food for lunch, and the exchange participants had the chance to share their views on U.S.-Turkish foreign policy with the gathered crowd. After the public event, our guests met with Mr. Tarik Celik, Executive Director of the Istanbul Center, and Mr. Ferhat Demir, Executive Director of the Turkish American Chamber of Commerce of the Southeast U.S. They discussed their organizations’ work to make U.S.-Turkish relations stronger.

The next day our guests started their day by visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. Here they learned more about the legacy of one of Atlanta’s most famous citizens. Afterwards they went to the Carter Center, where they met with Ms. Perin Arkun and Mr. Hrair Balian of the Conflict Resolution Program. They discussed the Carter Center's work in the Middle East. Later they spent time at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, where they learned more about the work of President Carter.

Ambassadors Aksoy and Arim spent time in Washington, DC and New York City in addition to Atlanta while participating in the International Visitor Leadership Program. GCIV was honored to host these distinguished former Turkish ambassadors in Atlanta and to arrange a professional program for them. We look foward to hearing more about their work at the Foreign Policy Institute at Bilkent University.
