South African Journalist Discusses Politics and Civil Rights with Atlanta Counterparts

GCIV recently had the privilege to host Ms. Lumka Oliphant of South Africa. Ms. Oliphant is an up-and-coming reporter with the Sunday weekly City Press newspaper. She covers political topics and also writes regular pieces on individuals and groups who are civil society leaders in their communities. She traveled to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program to learn about media coverage of the U.S. presidential elections and civil rights issues.

Ms. Oliphant at home hospitality

While in Atlanta, her first day of appointments began by meeting with Mr. Jim Galloway, political reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They discussed his work reporting on local, state, and national elections. Afterwards, Ms. Oliphant met with Mr. Shawn Hanley of the Fulton County Republican Party to discuss the current U.S. presidential elections and the Republican primary. She ended the day of appointments visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site to learn about the civil rights movement. That evening, Ms. Oliphant had the opportunity to experience home hospitality in the home of one of our GCIV hosts, which was the highlight of her visit to Atlanta.

Ms. Oliphant began her second day of appointments meeting with Mr. Joe Beasley of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition to discuss the civil rights movement, past and present. She was then hosted for lunch at one GCIV’s Global Lunch Forums, where she had the opportunity to discuss her work on a more informal level with GCIV members. Finally, Ms. Oliphant met with Mr. Matt Weyandt, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia to discuss the presidential elections, particularly the Democratic primary.

Ms. Oliphant began her program in Baltimore, and after Atlanta headed to Boston to finish her program in the U.S. GCIV was honored to host Ms. Lumka Oliphant in Atlanta and meet with our many valuable professional resources. Her experiences here gave her a first-hand view of the current presidential elections as well as some new ideas to take with her back to South Africa.
