Visitor's Passion for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream Brings Him to Atlanta

Moses Mukami is a young Kenyan who had a link to Atlanta before he ever traveled here through the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program. When he founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Africa Foundation he committed himself to propagating the principles of democracy and equality for which Dr. King stood. Naturally, when offered the chance to travel to the United States he requested a stop in Dr. King’s home. Mr. Mukami’s program focused not only on civil rights efforts but also youth leadership programs, since he is the former Kenyan Chapter President of the National Youth Parliament and President of the Federation of Teens. He met with many professionals in Atlanta working on similar issues January 29-February 1st, 2007.

His professional program in Atlanta began with a visit to the Rainbow/PUSH Southern Regional headquarters. Here he met with Director Joe Beasley, who discussed the American civil rights movement, past and present. Mr. Beasley had

just been in Kenya a few weeks prior and they talked about future collaborations. Next, he went to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site where he had the chance to see Dr. King's birth home and final resting place. He spent several hours poring over the exhibits and learning more about one of Atlanta's most well-known citizens. Afterwards he had the chance to visit the Atlanta History Center, where he saw Dr. King's personal papers in his own handwriting, documenting the progress of his campaign for human justice.

On his second day of programming, Mr. Mukami first went to Morehouse College to meet with Dr. T.J. Prince, Associate Director of the Morehouse Leadership Center. They discussed the center's efforts to train a new generation of leaders to address pressing contemporary ethical and social concerns. Next, he met with Eric Tidwell at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. They discussed the programs the center coordinates and ways that the MLK Africa Foundation can better live up to Dr. King's legacy. Later in the day he met with Mr. Subash Razdan, Acting Chair of the Gandhi Foundation of the USA. Mr. Razdan discussed the foundation's work and the role that Mahatma Gandhi's life played in Dr. King's legacy. Finally, Moses went to the offices of the Jean Childs Young Institute for Youth Leadership. He met with Executive Director Andrea Chambers and also participated in a youth board meeting. He had the opportunity to tell the children about Kenya and learn how the institute's programs had affected their lives.

GCIV was honored to have this distinguished visitor come to Atlanta as part of the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program. His experiences on this program gave him a first-hand view of Dr. King's life and programs promoting civil rights and youth leadership. We wish Mr. Mukami the best of luck, and hope his trip to Atlanta will help in his professional endeavors.
