where they met with several staff and faculty at the University of Georgia. Representatives of the International Center for Democratic Governance spoke with the group about civic education, the history of the legislature, the bill-making process, and working with committees. Representatives from the Institute of Higher Educationlegal concerns when drafting constitutions. In addition to meeting with representatives of the University, the delegation had a chance to see the campus and meet some students.
On their second day of professional programming, the delegation started with a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. They enjoyed the chance to learn more about Dr. King's work and Atlanta's civil rights legacy. Next they went to CARE USA headquarters, where they learned about the poverty alleviation programs that CARE coordinates in the DRC and throughout Africa. Finally, the group ended their program in Atlanta by meeting with Mayor Shirley Franklin. Mayor Franklin talked about her experiences traveling and studying in Africa and gave the delegation an overview of the civil and human rights activism in Atlanta city government, past and present.
GCIV appreciated the opportunity to host these distinguished guests in Georgia. We only hope that they received as much benefit from their program in Atlanta and Athens as those who met with them. We look forward to hearing of these legislators' continued progress back home in the DRC.
