|
The Georgia Council for International Visitors had the distinct pleasure of hosting eight university administrators from Nigeria. This prominent group of Vice Chancellors (Presidents) represented universities throughout Nigeria and are involved in the reform of Nigeria's educational system. While in the US, the group had the objectives of learning more about the structure of higher education in the US, the relationship between universities and other sectors, and the support received from alumni associations, corporations, and the government. They had the opportunity to meet with many relevant professional resources while in Atlanta.
First the group went to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum for a private tour of the facilities. While there, they had the pleasure of meeting former President Jimmy Carter and had

Atlanta University. She discussed with the group the importance of the historically black colleges and universities of the Atlanta University Center, and their importance in the structure of US higher education. Later that afternoon the group went to the offices of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents' Office of International Education. They met with Dr. Rick Sutton, Director of International Programs and Senior Advisor for Academic Affairs. The group discussed the organization of higher education, university linkages, and international programs throughout the state. Finally, the group had the chance to go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. They felt a true connection to Atlanta through the powerful exhibits and historical displays.
GCIV was extremely pleased to have these honored guests come to Atlanta as part of the US Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Their experiences here in Atlanta as well as Washington, DC, Boston, and Pittsburgh gave them an insight into the workings of the United States system of higher education that will help them institute reform back in Nigeria. We look forward to hearing of their continued progress.
