Delegation Spotlight

Ms. Janjira Thaibandith with representatives from the Georgia Care Connection.

This past month, GCIV hosted Ms. Janjira Thaibandith, a social worker from Thailand. She participated in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) focusing on the U.S. juvenile justice system. This opportunity allowed her to examine U.S. family law and custody issues, compare best practices for advocacy and protection of children as well as dealing with juvenile offenders.

While in Atlanta, she met with representatives from the Georgia Care Connection (pictured above), ICE Homeland Security Investigations, the Barton Child Law and Policy Center, Not For Sale Campaign, Tapestri, Inc., Voices for Georgia's Children, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Ms. Thaibandith also visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and sat in on a court hearing at Fulton County Juvenile Court.

Discover Diplomacy

What is DiplomacyThe U.S. Department of State has launched a new interactive website to introduce the world of diplomacy and the work of the Department to high school and college students. Through the use of video clips, audio tracks, images and interactive components, the site covers the basic questions about diplomacy: who engages in it and where, as well as an exploration of the range of international issues addressed through the diplomatic process. Check out what diplomacy is here:

The CASIE Speakeasy

On the first Wednesday of the month, the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) presents a model language lesson and a different language each month at Speakeasy. The rules of the Speakeasy are simple. Instructors prepare a one hour lesson completely in the target language with no use of English. Then participants, usually with little prior study of the language but many multilingual, converse. Japanese, Amharic, Swahili, Dutch, Romanian, Hebrew, American Sign Language, Tagalog, and Latin are currently scheduled for 2012. NOTE: CASIE is currently looking for other instructors, particularly in languages not commonly taught in American schools. This is a great opportunity to promote languages and culture. For more information, visit or email John Wilson.

L'Arche International Meeting

Are you curious to meet people from all over the world? Get a glimpse into their culture, traditions and habits? Do you thrive on diversity? Do you feel like showing the hidden secrets of Atlanta and your neighborhood to a foreigner? Are you adept at the art of Southern hospitality?

We would like to invite you to consider being a part of the upcoming L'Arche International Family Weekend. L'Arche, an international movement founded in France, welcomes persons with intellectual disabilities into homes and workshops all over the world.
This summer, June 3 - 10, Atlanta will welcome L'Arche communities from around the world to its General Assembly meeting at Agnes Scott College. We expect 500 participants from about 40 countries. On the weekend prior to the Assembly, from June 1st to June 3rd, the Atlanta community will open its homes to L'Arche delegates.

We are actively seeking families who would be willing to host two to three guests. The invitation is simple and the weekend is yours to make! On Friday, June 1st, you will meet your guests at Decatur Presbyterian. We do suggest that you visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center on Saturday.  If worship is a part of your family life, please take your guests along.  On Sunday, you will take your guests to Agnes Scott College for the Opening Ceremony of the Assembly, to which you are of course invited.
Interested?  Please visit to register online and find more information.  Contact us at 404 956 2123 should you have questions.  Or visit one of our info-sessions (details online).  In the name of our international friends - thanks!
