"GCIV is an organization that offers great opportunities without any obligation. It is a source of uncommon knowledge and awareness of all things international, yet local. How many of your neighbors know 478 leaders from 113 countries were here last year? Did they have an opportunity to meet any of them? You, as a member of GCIV at any level, will know who is coming in 2016 and have such an opportunity. If you aren't a member, join today! If you are, spread the word about the Georgia Council for International Visitors. Get involved with no obligation: only opportunity."

Two Easy Ways to Give to GCIV!
Two Easy Ways to Give to GCIV!
Wouldn't it be great if you could both save money, and also GIVE to help make the world a better place, at NO extra cost?

Goodshop is an online shopping mall that will donate a percent of your purchase price to GCIV when you shop at one of 3,000+ partner stores including top retailers like Amazon (1.5% donation), Expedia (up to 5% donation), and Staples (2.5% donation). You can also find 25,000+ active discounts and money-saving coupons so you can save money and give back at the same time! There is no cost and the experience of shopping through Goodshop is exactly the same as going to the retailer directly, except that you have the added bonus that through your shopping, you can earn donations for your favorite cause (the Georgia Council for International Visitors)!

Similarly, AmazonSmile will automatically donate 0.5% of your purchases to the charitable organization that you select (GCIV!). It costs you (and us) nothing, and when you shop at smile.amazon.com, you'll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to GCIV. To get started, simply log on to smile.amazon.com and select the Georgia Council for International Visitors as your charitable organization. AmazonSmile will remember your selection, and subsequently every eligible purchase that you make will result in a donation to GCIV.

Who would have thought that shopping could make such a world of difference?!

Dinner Hospitality
GCIV is hosting 140 Fulbright Scholars from all over the world for dinner hospitality, and we need your help!

Due to the large size of the groups, we are asking each host to accommodate at least 4 visitors, if possible. If you are unable to host, but would still like to participate, we are also in need of volunteer drivers to escort the Fulbrighters to and from their hotel that evening.

The scholars always reference dinner hospitality with local hosts as their top enrichment highlight while in Atlanta.

To host these entertaining and distinguished students/scholars, please contact Emily O'Harris at emily@gciv.org or 404-832-5560 x 15.
December Meeting Highlight
December Meeting Highlight
On Thursday, December 10 a delegation of Sudanese Sufi clerics here under the theme of "Promoting Religious Tolerance and Peaceful Settlement of Conflicts" attended a panel discussion co-hosted by Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters and GCIV. An all-women group of religious community leaders and interfaith activists from the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian faiths gathered to share their insight concerning religious tolerance as well as women in religion. The three-hour panel was truly a profound moment for GCIV and for all involved as our Sudanese friends listened to the female leaders and responded with their own questions and beliefs. The dialogue flowed through a wide range of issues, including an interesting debate concerning whether completely free speech that leads to blasphemy could be a major impetus for radicalizing terrorists, and whether or not free speech should be limited in this case. After hearing about the enormity of the interfaith work happening in Atlanta, the clerics also raised a discussion about the necessity for international media coverage of this work in order to inform and encourage other cultures that struggle with interfaith issues. The issue on which the entire group agreed was the invaluable benefit of educating women and engaging women in the community. Perfectly highlighting the essence of this panel, one cleric quoted Egyptian poet Ahmed Rami, stating, "When you prepare the mother, you prepare the whole nation."

GCIV would like to thank AIB and all of the panelists:
Audrey Galex — Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters
Melanie Nelkin — Georgia Coalition to Prevent Genocide
Judy Marx — Interfaith Community Initiatives
Soumaya Khalifa — Islamic Speakers Bureau
Rabbi Ruth Abusch-Magder — Be'chol Lashon
Angela Harrington-Rice — Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters
Transatlantic Passage to Spain: A New Travel Opportunity
Transatlantic Passage to Spain: A New Travel Opportunity
GCIV members and friends are invited to join our former Executive Director, George Brown, on a new travel experience April 15-29, 2016: A transatlantic cruise from Ft. Lauderdale Florida to Barcelona, Spain with six port calls in Portugal and Spain. This is a great travel bargain, with cabin prices (per person/double occupancy) for the 14 night voyage starting at $1,425 for an inside cabin and $1,695 for a balcony on Celebrity Equinox.

Passage to Spain is more than an ordinary cruise. It is the first in a series of Great Ocean Voyages that combine an attractive cruise itinerary with a daily educational enrichment program just for your group of lifelong learners during the days at sea.

Once you arrive in Barcelona you can continue your European trip on your own, join an extension to Madrid, or return home. Regardless of the option you select, you'll be able to take advantage of some great one-way return airfare rates from Europe to the USA.

As a bonus for GCIV members, the fee you pay will include a $150 tax deductible donation to GCIV.

If traveling to Europe is in your plans for the future, contact George for more information: 404-583-7730; george@gtbtravel.com to see if this might be right for you.

Donate Your Appreciated Stock to GCIV
We are pleased to announce that GCIV can now accept your donations of publicly-traded stock. This alternative to making cash donations provides significant benefits to both GCIV and the donors, as it usually enables the donors to give more money to the charity than they would if they sold the stocks on their own, paid taxes on the gains, and then donated the remaining cash to the organization.

The donor can deduct the current fair market value of the stock as their charitable donation, without paying the capital gains taxes that would apply if they sold the stock themselves. GCIV benefits by receiving the current market value of the stock.

For further information about making a donation to GCIV in the form of stock, please contact the Treasurer, Bruce Taylor at brucektaylor@gmail.com.
