Home Hospitality
Opportunities Wednesday, September 20th - Six
visitors from Bahrain would like evening home hospitality. The
visitors do not speak English, so we need to divide them into two
groups: three visitors each and an interpreter.
Thursday,
September 28th - Six visitors from Pakistan would like evening
home hospitality. Most of the visitors do not speak English, so we
need to divide them into two groups: three visitors each and an
interpreter.
Tuesday, October 3rd - One Japanese
visitor would like home hospitality. She speaks English and does not
need an interpreter.
Thursday, October 12 - Fourteen
visitors from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand
would like evening home hospitality. All of the visitors speak
English, so our goal is to give each visitor his or her own home
hospitality experience.
Please note: Home hospitality
opportunities are available to GCIV members only. Hosts are asked to
provide transportation to and from the hotel on the evening of home
hospitality. If you are interested in hosting visitors in your home
for dinner on these dates, please contact Emily
Bushey at 404-965-4329.

Dear Citizen Diplomats,
Last month we announced that
GCIV is planning the first ever Atlanta Summit on
Citizen Diplomacy. It will take place on October 21, 2006
at the Atlanta
International School. We are excited to reveal some key
details of the summit. Sherry Mueller, President of the National
Council for International Visitors, will offer opening
remarks on the power of citizen diplomacy. Tom Miller,
Vice-President of Business
for Diplomatic Action, will give a keynote address on the
the importance of citizen diplomacy in stemming the growth of
anti-Americanism around the world. You can find more
information at the GCIV
web site.
The Atlanta
Summit on Citizen Diplomacy will offer all Georgians the
opportunity to develop the skills necessary to succeed in
today’s global environment while learning to build rich and
rewarding intercultural relationships. We strongly recommend
GCIV's hosts and professional resources attend to expand their
cultural competency. The summit is free and open to the
public. We have already begun to receive registration
forms from our members, and space is filling quickly. Public
registration will open September 8th on the GCIV web site.
Remember, we can only accept the first 250
registrations!
We look forward to seeing you at the
summit!

GCIV hosted seven government officials from the
Philippines August 13-17. These visitors were invited to
the United States under the auspices of the US
Department of State's International Visitor Leadership
Program. While in Atlanta the group met with key
professional counterparts and experienced American
culture. Click here

| Focus on Home Hospitality
|
Home hospitality is an opportunity for you to invite
an international visitor to dinner in your home for an
evening. While the distinguished visitors traveling on
the International
Visitor Leadership Program are participating in a
professional exchange, the State Department asks us to
also include this more personal component in visitors'
programs. Home hospitality gives visitors the chance to
see an American home and eat a meal outside of a
restaurant or hotel during their three-week
program.
To become a home hospitality host, you
must commit to picking up the visitors from the hotel,
bringing them home for dinner, and returning them at the
end of the evening. You can always co-host with a friend
or neighbor to split the cooking and driving duties. We
strongly recommend that our hosts attend the Atlanta
Summit on Citizen Diplomacy to learn about different
regions of the world and become more familiar with
intercultural dialogue. GCIV announces these home
hospitality opportunities through our monthly
e-newsletter (check the gray column on the left under
"Who's Coming to Town"). We also send an email to those
who have indicated interest in hosting throughout the
month when other opportunities arise. If you would like
to be added to this list, please email Ashley
Mastin. In the coming months we will highlight the
lasting connections made by GCIV hosts and our visitors.

| International Visitor Receives
Unexpected Help |
In July the Santa Fe Council on
International Relations (CIR) and the Albuquerque
Council for International Visitors (ACIV) hosted a group
of African radio and TV professionals. ACIV members and
staff realized that one of the visitors, who has been
blind since birth, had never been treated for his
cataracts because of the lack of medical specialists in
Libya. They arranged for him to visit an
ophthalmologist, who concluded that Mr. Jeff Tarnue has
treatable congenital cataracts. Doctors will remove his
cataracts and implant new lenses.
ACIV members
have generously covered Mr. Tarnue’s costs, which are
expected to reach over $10,000. If you'd like to help
you can send a check payable to the Jeff Tarnue
Medical Fund. Send checks to Betty Davis at 3420
Vista del Sur NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120. Contributions
are tax deductible. Contact Don Goldman of
CIR at 505-473-2821 with any questions.
